Don’t Trust the Smiling DM - Revisited

Once upon a time I had absolutely no interest at all in TTRPG type podcasts like TCG or RPG game podcasts which a few I still follow. Plus yes I did try to do some of the mainstream or popular once, just didn’t click with me. Either it was a continuous campaign or just random TTRPG facts or reviews.

That was until one fateful day I stumbled on a wicked looking logo with….

I was like…. WTF is this? This looks very interesting, while investigating what in the world this was. I realized it was a group recording their campaign, and some details about them saw they were in episode 14 at the time. I was like this is not my type of thing, but will give it a try logo plus the name sounds wicked.

By the end while I caught up to episode 15, I realized just how an amazing group of adventures has brought me laughter into tears at points with the fun situations they get themselves into in this 5E homebrew.

So far the story has been very interesting, hitting some very intense moments, and excellent storytelling from the Smiling DM himself. As the adventure's actions sometimes move the story itself into some unique, and hysterical situations.

So heads up spoilers from here on, will be discussing how the story is progressing all the way up to episode 36. First part is more or less a teaser or preview of the enjoyable adventure so far, and the second section will be full of spoilers.

You follow an group of adventures

Grak, the Barbarian

Hecate, the Warlock

Miguel, the Paladin

Lily, the Sorcerer

Vyvyen, the Monk

Grubs, the Cleric

As they travel through the land of Avalas, a land known for its lush forest blessed by the goddess Chauntea. So far into their journey they have already faced many challenges, life threatening battles that have left them all to learn new lessons, and secrets of the world that they travel through.

Just like any adventure the whole crew comes together getting to know each other in a town called Windborn, and things go south with a carnival filled with the undead. As they assembled into the team that they are now, even though the undead were fine being undead.

They then went into a few fights after a drink or two, and then found that the town farms completely died off.

They then went out on an adventure into the forest to solve the issues at hand where they met the Goddess, Lyndis who follows the goddess, and Drugar Lyndis little dragon. Along the way they found a set of dead adventurers who were sent ahead of themselves to see what the issue was with the crops.

From there they traveled to the Tree of Light where they found a set of unusual folk, and ran into a shady figure named Mox. While in the process Drugar is talking smack throughout this unsettling set of events. This is where Mox, and his friends were systematically beaten down by one said individual. Mox their new friendenemy.

After just nearly making it through this insane encounter they leave the tree's dungeon, as the whole forest was dead. As well seeing Lyndis who was once a young woman to now an elderly woman. Where all the time in the forest feels like it’s in the distance of the future, when going back into town they are now everything is normal. Everyone at the carnival is alive, and things are just fine.

From here on there are more spoilers you have been warned!!!!

Finding that most likely to go out, find Mox with his friends to see if they have taken the Light of Chauntea. Plus to figure out what deeper secrets, and meaning behind all of this.

As they adventure out they find themselves in a battle Royal against each other which is hysterical, but poor Miguel was not a part of, sadly. Where Lily went on a rampage, Vyvyen yeeted a statue towards Grubs then took Grak out by accident while in the process getting blasted off a 120ft coliseum thanks to Hecate. Later on Hecate a Warlock dominated the Battle Royal which absolutely shocked everyone, including myself.

From here on our adventures defend off a set of Occultist, and Owlbears to save Miguel. Where the group bonded over a fire telling stories of their past. Then a good set, the group got sick off of some real bad owlbear steaks, and found themselves in the town of EarthWood.

In the EarthWood they recover from recent events, stock up on goods, meet the slowest speaking priest I have ever heard of, think about magical pop up books, drink some ass-presso, getting teabagged or getting as many tea bags they can get, and finding themselves in the Belcourts Manor filled with traps, cultist, Oh MY!!!! As the group gets somewhat split up, and finds a lot of danger as Drugar is in a completely emotionless state.. Will they make it out alive? What will happen?

You can check it out here in their latest episode -

So as a personal recap of myself, they have kept close to the main story line with a few side quests that do lead up into the main piece of the story itself. Yes if you do not already know, that this is very NSFW or not good for little ears. But it is truly a laugh on what happens at this campaign's table, and I thoroughly enjoy every episode. I have some speculations on what is going to happen with key details that come with episode 36. Hope that the seed can be found, and that our companions are able to get Drugar back into his sarcastic self once more. If you want to learn more about them please check out their page on our website, and go to the many platforms on which you can hear the podcast itself.

Until next time thank you for checking us out, and always remember “Don’t Trust the Smiling DM”.
